Ultrasonic Testing (UT) Explained: Internal Inspection Without Shutdown

الأخبار.

What is Ultrasonic Testing (UT)?
Ultrasonic Testing (UT) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method used to measure wall thickness and detect internal defects using high-frequency sound waves. By analysing how these waves reflect within a material, UT provides accurate insight into internal condition of the entire asset without interrupting operations.

It is used across the energy sector for internal inspection where access is limited and fatigue is critical. For example, AISUS regularly applies UT during offshore inspections where operators need clear condition data in a timely and cost-efficient manner.

Why is UT used for internal inspection?
Internal corrosion and wall loss are the most common causes of asset failure. UT enables operators to inspect from the outside while understanding internal condition, making it essential for maintaining asset integrity.

Typical applications include pipework, caissons, j-tubes and offshore structures where early detection of wall thinning or defects can prevent failure, reduce risk and support asset life extension. AISUS uses UT to assess through the critical splash zone, collecting wall thickness data remotely from topside for clients.

What are the challenges of UT inspections?
While UT is highly effective, deploying it has traditionally required complex and costly access. In offshore environments, especially through the splash zone or behind guide frames where fretting is often present, inspections often rely on scaffolding, rope access, confined space entry or divers.

This not only increases cost and time but also introduces additional safety risk and potential disruption to operations. Many operators are now looking for ways to obtain the same high-quality UT data while reducing the need for additional vendors and high costs.

What is remote ultrasonic testing offshore?
AISUS delivers a smarter, safer approach to offshore UT inspections by deploying remote, no-man-entry inspection solutions. Our robotic isnpection technology is equipped with UT probes, delivering data with accuracy. Covering areas from platform level, through the splash zone, and down to termination grilles, C-Scan data is presented via a data management platform.

What are the key benefits of Ultrasonic Testing?
Ultrasonic Testing remains a preferred method for internal inspection because it delivers:
• Accurate wall thickness measurement and corrosion detection, even the smallest defects can be detected. Material that may seem perfect on the surface but may have large defects within and this is why UT is a vital inspection technique for the offshore industry.
• A fully non-destructive approach with no damage to assets.
• Real-time data to support decision-making.
• Ultrasonic testing can be carried out quickly and remotely, where inspections are completed without shutdown.

For AISUS clients, this often means inspections can be completed in a single operation, across multiple pipelines, avoiding the need for additional vendors, with high costs and timely downtime.
