Internal Visual and 98% gauge plate inspection of I-Tubes

Overview

AISUS carried out an internal visual and gauge plate inspection of three I-Tubes on an FPSO, mobilised to Nigeria, Africa.  This client needed AISUS expertise and technology to ensure feasibility and no disruptions to the pull through of subsea umbilicals at a 98% internal diameter.

Requirement

An Initial visual inspection was carried out to assess the cleanliness of the I-Tube to ensure there were no obstructions or heavy marine life that could obstruct any tooling that was to be deployed into the I-Tube. This was carried out for the entire length, recording visible anomalies, the condition and elevations of the circumferential welds and any remaining coating. Enabling a full and detailed Remote Visual Inspection and internal diameter measurement with gauge plates.

Challenges

  • Due to kinks within the I-Tubes care was to be taken when passing through, ensuring the tooling doesn’t snag.
  • Gauge Plates have the potential to become stuck during inspection.

Results

Our experienced field engineers ensured the centraliser system was able to free run down the entire length of the I-Tubes and that there was no snagging when passing through.

During the initial visual inspection, it was confirmed by the client that HP water jetting would not be required as there was minimal marine fouling recorded.

The 98%-gauge plate successfully passed through the I-Tube with no signs of bending/damage to any of the gauge plate fins. This enabled the client to go ahead with the pulling through of the subsea umbilicals.

Remote Visual Inspection revealed the I-Tube coating appears to still be well bonded with minimal signs of coating breakdown. No through wall features observed throughout the entire length of the I-Tube.
